Abstract

The study focused on blended learning and its impact on the academic achievement of pupils in upper basic level (UBE) social studies of Afikpo North local government of ebonyi state. Four research questions guided the study. This study uses method of constructivist learning theory that is used in teaching-learning based on mental active and constructing knowledge based on interaction and experience. It is a descriptive survey research design methodology that was employed in the study. The number of participants of the study is 1,370 that consists of 1,346 students and 24 teachers of the students from the Social Studies. Respondents of the sample were 309 respondents which was derived from the Taro Yamane formula and simple random sampling technique was applied to obtain the respondents. Mean statistics were used to analyse the data collected, the decision reference was 2.50. The results showed that the traditional teaching model plays a significant role in providing students' learning performance improvement, manifested in the students' concentration and understanding. The study also found that the introduction of the technology tools of Internet into the blended learning had positive effect on both students' engagement and learning outcomes. The challenges to effectively implement it are however, related to Internet connectivity, absence of digital devices, power supply instability and lack of training. Moreover, the development of BL by introducing the infrastructure facility, teacher training and government support was emphasized in the study. Based on the findings of this research, it is then concluded that blended learning if applied to the teaching and learning process can improve students' achievement. Capacity building and leveraging digital resources was encouraged to enable stakeholders to be effective.
