Abstract

This study examined youth apathy towards marriage in Enugu Urban with the aim of identifying the socio-economic, cultural, psychological, and media-related factors influencing declining interest in marriage among young adults. The specific objectives were to examine the socio-economic factors contributing to youth apathy towards marriage, assess the influence of cultural and social factors, investigate the psychological factors associated with marriage apathy, and determine the influence of media and globalization on youth attitudes toward marriage in Enugu Urban. The study adopted a mixed-method research design involving both quantitative and qualitative approaches. The population of the study consisted of youths in selected communities within Enugu Urban, while a sample size of 440 respondents was selected using multi-stage sampling techniques. Data were collected through questionnaires, interview schedules, and focus group discussions. Frequency tables, percentages, and Chi-square statistical techniques were used for data analysis. The findings revealed that unemployment, high cost of living, bride price demands, fear of divorce, emotional unpreparedness, and social media exposure significantly contributed to youth apathy towards marriage. The study concluded that changing socio-economic realities, cultural transformations, psychological concerns, and globalization are reshaping youth perceptions of marriage in Enugu Urban. The study recommended employment creation, reduction of excessive traditional marriage costs, premarital counselling programmes, relationship education, and community dialogue aimed at addressing the growing decline in youth interest toward marriage.
