Abstract

This research work focused on the influence of news report on the choice of football idols among undergraduate of Enugu State University of Science and Technology (ESUT). The study is guided by the following objectives; to determine how often undergraduate students engage with football news report; to Identify the most commonly used channels for accessing football news among students; to ascertain students' perceptions of how football news reports portray football idols; to examine whether football news reports influence students' choice of football idols. The study adopted the framing theory. The study adopted survey research design. The population of the study involves the entire students of Enugu State University of Science and Technology. The total population as derived from the school is 50000. A sample size of 396 was gotten through Taro Yamane formula. The findings of the study reveals that the students often engage with football news report, social media is the most used source of information on football news report. Also, Football news reports over-glorifies football idols, Media reports shape how the students perceive and value football idols and influences students’ choice of football idols. The study recommends that there is need to support and encourage young individuals who have potentials and zeal to future in football, this will grease their zeal and promote their enthusiasm towards their quest.
