Abstract
Women are grossly under-represented in Nigerian political sphere. Studies have revealed that a small fraction of women hold political positions in Nigeria. The surveillance function of the media includes ensuring various audience demographics get equal representation; hence this study sets out to examine the influences the African Independent Television (AIT) has on women awareness and participation in Nigerian politics. The study is anchored on Source Credibility Theory and survey research methodology was used for the research. The population of 968,300 consisted of women in Enugu Urban. The findings of the study reveal that 68.8% of the women respondents watch political program on AIT knowing that AIT is a credible source for political awareness. Based on these findings, the study recommends that Women should rendezvous to use AIT as a source for political awareness. They should break the gender gap by paying adequate to programs that edifies politically and finally, given the prospects of women using AIT for political awareness and participation, women should be encouraged to make public their political interest, using AIT as a platform.
