Abstract

This study was carried out in Thinkers’ corner, Godfrey okoye university to ascertain the parasite contamination of Nigeria Currency notes. A total of seventy samples of N5, N10, N20, N50, N100, N200, N500 and N1000 denominations of both paper and polymer naira notes. These were collected from food vendors around Thinkers` corner. They were grouped into polymer and paper notes and thereafter separated based on their physical appearances: mint, clean, dirty, and mutilated. Each currency of both paper and polymer notes were rinsed with normal saline and the solution centrifuged and then examined microscopically for parasite cyst and eggs. Out of seventy samples examined, thirty five (50%) were contaminated. The isolated parasites were Entamoeba histolytica, Echerichia coli, Giardia lamblia, Flagellates, Ascaris lumbricoides, and Hookworm ova. The mutilated and dirty notes were the most contaminated. For lower denominations, ten naira (0.53%) and five naira(0.6%) notes were the most contaminated while five hundred naira notes(0.2%) were the least contaminated one thousand(0%) had no contamination as seen in the study. For lower denomination fifty naira(0.2%) were the least contaminated . The study showed that dirty naira notes are potential routes for parasitic transmission to man during handling.
