Abstract

English language is a unique field of study being international in origin, international in reach and enjoying a wide usage all over the world. English language also occupies an important place in Nigeria as a second language, an official language as well as the language of education. This study focuses on what it takes to internationalize the teaching of English Language, in this country, especially the spoken aspect. It is important to keep abreast with world standard of teaching English language. The research design was a descriptive survey. Three research questions were raised to guide the study. Instrument used was a researcher structured questionnaire validated by experts in Measurement and Evaluation from Godfrey Okoye University, Thinker’s Corner , Enugu. The sample consists of 165 respondents (being students of Education/English (all levels) from two federal universities in Enugu and Anambra states-(University of Nigeria, Nsukka and Nnamdi Azikiwe University, Awka). Mean scores were used for data analysis. Based on the findings of the study, it was recommended, among other things that the methodology of teaching English language/ oral English needs to be reviewed to meet international standards. Such a change should include the use of mobile phones for learning purposes.
