Abstract

Water is vital to the existence of all living organism but this valued resource is increasingly being threatened as human population grow and demand more water of high quality for domestic purposes and economic activities, the quality of any body of surface or groundwater is a function of either both natural influences and human activities, Tanker water supplied in Enugu metropolis is mostly obtained from boreholes which its main source of water is groundwater. This water does not undergo any form of purification process, thus the water contains various properties that are detrimental to its quality. In this present study water samples were collected from different locations and different tankers in Enugu metropolis. Physiochemical and biochemical analysis were determined using analytical tools and reagents, the analysis and Atomic Spectrophometer according to the method of APHA. The analysis carried out on the water samples was compared using the WHO and NAFDAC standard for drinking water. Out of 20 water samples, 18 samples were above the WHO and NAFDAC standard for turbidity (5), 5 samples were above the standard for fluoride(1.5), 12 samples were above the standard for lead (0.01), 14 samples were above the standard for nickel(0.02), 7 samples were above the standard for mercury(0.001), 20 samples were above the standard for cadmium(0.003) and 20 samples were also above the standard for pH(6.5-8.5). This study shows that tanker supplied water in Enugu metropolis maybe unfit for human consumption.
