Abstract

This study evaluates the effect of government consumption expenditure on Nigeria’s economic growth from 2013 to 2023, using inflation rate, interest rate, and budget deficit as control variables. The main aim is to determine how government consumption spending influences GDP growth during the decade marked by economic reforms, oil price fluctuations, and fiscal adjustments. The objectives are to analyse the relationship between government consumption expenditure and GDP growth, and to examine how inflation, interest rate, and fiscal deficits interact with this relationship. The scope is limited to Nigeria, with data drawn from 2013 to 2023 to capture recent macroeconomic trends. The dependent variable is GDP growth, while the independent variable is government consumption expenditure, and the control variables are inflation, interest rate, and budget deficit. A quantitative research method was adopted, using annual time series data analysed through the Autoregressive Distributed Lag (ARDL) approach to identify both short-run and long�run effects. The findings show that government consumption expenditure positively influences GDP growth, but its impact is weakened by rising inflation and persistent fiscal deficits. Interest rate variations were found to have a marginal effect, depending on the investment environment. The study concludes that strategic allocation of government consumption spending can support sustainable growth if complemented by stable macroeconomic policies. It recommends improving fiscal transparency, reducing waste in recurrent expenditure, and maintaining price stability to maximise the growth effects of public consumption.
