Abstract

This study focused on the role of the United Nations in conflict resolution in Africa with South Sudan as a case study. The study took a qualitative case study approach and relied on secondary data sources to evaluate the success of UN peacekeeping, diplomatic mediation, and peacebuilding efforts, as well as the obstacles that could arise to these interventions. The findings indicated that UN operations in the region, based on Collective Security Theory, had created a positive impact on the protection of civil lives, humanitarian support, ceasefire monitoring and dialogue with the relevant regional organizations. But these efforts were hampered by the overall success of these efforts owing to persistent political rivalries, ethnic tensions, weak governance, insecurity and delays in enacting peace agreements. The study found that although the UN’s conflict resolution efforts in South Sudan have not adequately ended the conflict, they have contributed significantly to the management of conflict, humanitarian stability and peacebuilding in the country, suggesting a more robust support to operations and more community-based reconciliation processes to include all stakeholders.
