Abstract

This research assesses traditional marriage in Mbutu community, Aboh-Mbaise Local Government Area of Imo State between 2012 and 2020. Traditional marriage remains animportant aspect of Igbo culture, serving as a means of establishing legitimate familyrelationships and preserving cultural values. However, misconceptions regarding the natureandcost of bride price in Mbutu, Aboh-Mbaise have generated debates and dif erent perceptionsamong both the indigenes and non-indigenes. The objective of this research is to tracethehistorical background of Mbutu, analyse why the people of Mbutu, Aboh-Mbaise upholdorcriticise traditional marriage, and their perceptions on traditional marriage and the changesthat have occurred overtime. This research adopts the historical research method, utilizingprimary, secondary and tertiary sources of data. Primary sources include oral interview, archival materials, secondary sources include books, journal articles while tertiary sourcescomprise of internet materials. Findings reveal that bride price in Mbutu traditionally servesasa symbol of appreciation, family alliance, and social legitimacy rather than commercializationof women. The research further finds that modernization, Christianity, education, and urbanizationhave influenced traditional marriage practices, leading to modifications in certain customs. Theresearch concludes that traditional marriage remains significant aspects of Mbutu heritageandrecommends the preservation of beneficial customs while discouraging excessive financial demands associated with marriage ceremonies.
