Abstract

This study assessed how the marriage traditions of the Nenwe people changed over time, how these alterations affected the socio-cultural fabric of the community, and the continuities it maintained in Aninri Local Government Area of Enugu State, Nigeria, between 1976 and 1991. Using a qualitative historical approach, the study incorporated oral interviews with community elders, indigenous witnesses, and title holders in addition to written sources such as books, academic journals, and contemporary online articles. According to the study's findings, the traditional marriage system has historically played a significant role in maintaining social order, building kinship alliances, reinforcing cultural identity, and fostering communal cohesion across the autonomous sub-communities. Even though the marriage institution is currently struggling with modernization, religious realignment, and economic pressures, it remains a vital component of Nenwe's efforts to preserve its localized cultural heritage.
