Abstract

This research paper aims to analyze the international trade relationship on Nigeria’s economy in terms of its impact on economic growth from 1990 to 2024 based on the annual time series data. The particular attention has been paid to the influence of export trade, import trade and trade openness on economic growth, and exchange rate and foreign direct investment (FDI) were used as control variables. Secondary data were obtained from the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN), and the analysis was conducted by means of the Ordinary Least Squares (OLS) estimation technique. Unit root test results show that the series are non-stationary in levels but are stationary after taking differences; while cointegration test results showed the long-run relationship among the variables. It can be said initially that the statistically positive and significant influence of export trade, trade openness and exchange rate on economic growth and negative but significant influence of import trade were observed in the short-run. In accordance with the aforementioned, FDI does not seem to have any significant influence on the growth of the economy in the stated period. On the basis of the research, the following recommendations were suggested: The government should develop non-oil sectors to increase diversity of exports, encourage productive imports which would contribute to development of domestic industries, develop the policy of favourable trade and exchange rate and promote trade openness through better trade facilitation and convenient trade agreements.
