Abstract

This study investigated the Comparative assessment of testis histology of young and aged rats to the effect of atrazine and carrageenan using serum testosterone concentration and testicular histology as indices of reproductive function. Thirty male rats were grouped into six experimental groups: control aged, control young, atrazine-aged, atrazine-young, atrazine plus carrageenan-aged, and atrazine plus carrageenan-young. Atrazine was administered orally at a dose of 200 mg/kg body weight 3 times per week for eight weeks, while carrageenan (0.1%) was administered on the last day of atrazine treatment in the designated groups. At the end of the experiment, blood samples were collected for serum testosterone assay using ELISA, while testes were harvested for histological examination using Hematoxylin and Eosin staining. The results showed variations in testosterone levels across the groups, with age-related differences in hormonal response. Histological findings revealed normal testicular architecture in the control groups, while atrazine-treated groups showed varying degrees of testicular distortion, including degeneration of spermatogenic cells, Leydig cell distortion, vascular congestion, and altered seminiferous tubular structure, with more severe changes observed in aged rats and in the atrazine plus carrageenan-aged group. The young rats showed relatively preserved seminiferous tubules, although interstitial alterations were still evident in the combined treatment group. These findings suggest that aging increases susceptibility to atrazine-induced testicular damage and highlight the need to minimize exposure to atrazine, particularly in vulnerable populations.
