Abstract
Antibiotics are a class of drug used for the treatment and management of various infections. There have been several reports of toxicity of antibiotics on different organs of the body. Hence, the present study investigated the effect of LEBAL-500 (an antibiotic) on the cardiovascular system and kidney using Lipid profile, Creatine Kinase activity, Cardiac Troponin I, Creatinine, Uric acid, Urea, bicarbonate as biomarkers. The research was conducted with twenty-five (25) adult albino rats randomly distributed into five (5) groups (A, B, C, D and E), five rats in each. Groups C, D and E were administered (by oral intubation) 7.14, 14.29 and 21.43 mg/kg body weight respectively of LEBAL-500 solution for five consecutive days. Group B(standard), received an intraperitoneal single dose of 7.5 mg/kg of doxorobicin on the first day because of it known effect on the cardiovascular and renal system. Group A (normal control) was given distilled water. There was a decrease in feed and water intake as well as physical activities and average body weight in group B,C, D, and E relative to the control (group A). Creatine Kinase activity and levels of cardiac troponin I, total cholesterol, triglycerides and low density lipoprotein were significantly (P<0.05) higher while HDL was significantly(P<0.05) lower in groups B, C, D&E than in the control (group A). The concentration of creatinine, urea, uric acid and bicarbonate recorded in groups B and E were significantly(P<0.05) higher than in group A.The difference in these renal parameters between group A and groups C and D was not significant (P>0.05). Further, the effects of doxorubicin were significantly(P<0.05) higher than that of LEBAL-500. These effects were found to be dose dependent. The findings of this study are indicative that the antibiotic (LEBAL-500) may be toxic to the cardiovascular system and renal system, thus, LEBAL-500, should not be recommended for a person with a cardiovascular disease, even at doses lower than the manufacturer’s dose while persons with renal disease may take the drug but with caution.
