Abstract
The decrease in the availability of a renewable and an eco friendly energy source has increased interest in the production of biodiesel from organic waste and underutilized feedstocks. This study investigated the production of biodiesel from pawpaw (Carica papaya) and has checked the physicochemical properties of both the extracted oil and the produced biodiesel. Pawpaw seeds were collected, dried, processed, and the oil extracted. The extracted oil was characterized using the standard analytical methods. While the biodiesel was produced through the process of transesterification, and process optimization was carried out using a design matrix, the produced biodiesel was then characterized and analysis of the results were carried out. The study shows that oil from pawpaw seed is a viable feedstock for the production of biodiesel, yielding a high oil content and fuel properties comparable to regular biodiesel production standards. The use of pawpaw seeds for biodiesel production provides a more sustainable approach to waste disposal and utilization, renewable energy generation, and environmental safety standards.
