Abstract

This study examined the impact of social media in enhancing socio-political mobilization among Nigerian youths between 2018 and 2023. The study was driven by the need to understand whether social media use among Nigerian youths aged 18 to 35 translates into meaningful civic and political action. Three research questions were raised: the extent of social media use for mobilization, how it fosters civic awareness and participation, and the challenges limiting its effectiveness. The study adopted Technological Determinism Theory and Uses and Gratifications Theory as its theoretical framework. A descriptive survey design was employed, and data were collected from 383 valid respondents across Nigeria's six geopolitical zones using a structured questionnaire. Data were analyzed using descriptive statistics and chi-square tests at a 0.05 significance level. Findings showed that social media is significantly used for socio-political mobilization (χ² = 318.74), that it significantly fosters civic awareness and political participation (χ² = 347.62), and that notable challenges — including fake news, high data costs, poor connectivity, and government repression — significantly constrain its effectiveness (χ² = 329.41). All three null hypotheses were rejected. The study concluded that while social media has opened meaningful civic space for Nigerian youths, its democratic potential remains limited by structural inequalities and repression. Recommendations were made to government, civil society, and social media platforms to address these barriers.
