Abstract

This study set to look at the impact of international terrorism on global security from the perspective of Nigeria taking the Boko Haram insurgency as a case as of recent period between 2020 and 2025. The study aimed to analyse Boko Haram's impact on the security, explore the potential for Boko Haram's global connections and inter-border operations, and analyse the impact of Boko Haram on human security and socio-economic conditions. The study was based on the Regional Security Complex Theory (RSCT) which emphasizes the interrelatedness of the acts of aggression in geographically certain areas. The data which was collected through secondary sources such as scholarly papers, government papers, databases about the conflicts, reports from international organizations like ACLED, UNHCR, UNDP and International Crisis Group was analysed using an exploratory research design and qualitative content analysis was used. The results showed that Boko Haram is no longer a part of the local insurgency, but an international terrorist group operating with inter-lake Chad Basin operational and ideological links with the broader Sahel region. The study also confirmed that the group's cross-border operations and alliances in the region and its ability to interrupt the security structures have successfully put the counterterrorism operations at risk, created humanitarian issues, hampered socio-economic activities and resulted in threats to the security of the region and the world. The study finds that Boko Haram is no longer a Nigeria security crisis; it's a transnational threat which needs an international coordinated response. It calls for increasing region-wide and international exchanges of information between the various relevant agency, increasing border security and institutional capacity, strengthening socio-economic conditions to prevent violent extremism through sustainable development and post-conflict recovery programmes. These measures are essential for improving both regional stability and global security.
