Abstract

This study examined the impact of the Chinese Digital Silk Road on Nigeria’s blue and digital economy between 2015 and 2025. The study focused on how Chinese digital investments influenced Nigeria’s digital transformation and rural broadband connectivity under China’s Belt and Road Initiative framework. The study was guided by Neo-colonialism Theory, which explains how powerful nations maintain economic, technological, and strategic influence over developing countries through foreign investments, infrastructural projects, and technological dependence. A qualitative research design was adopted using descriptive and analytical approaches. Data were obtained mainly from secondary sources, including reports from the Nigerian Communications Commission (NCC), National Information Technology Development Agency (NITDA), National Bureau of Statistics (NBS), International Telecommunication Union (ITU), government publications, academic journals, and international development reports. Qualitative content analysis was employed in analyzing and interpreting the data. The findings revealed that the Chinese Digital Silk Road significantly contributed to broadband expansion, fintech growth, digital entrepreneurship, rural connectivity, maritime digitization, and smart logistics development in Nigeria. The study further found that rural broadband penetration increased considerably during the study period, thereby improving digital inclusion and access to online services. The study concludes that the Chinese Digital Silk Road accelerated aspects of Nigeria’s digital and blue economy development through improved digital infrastructure, connectivity, and technological modernization. Sustainable digital development in Nigeria therefore requires stronger local innovation systems, improved cybersecurity governance, and policies that promote technological advancement and digital inclusion.
