Abstract
This study sought to examine the influence of social media validation on the self-esteem of youths in Abuja metropolis. The study was carried to find out the extent youths use social media platforms, the level of expectation of validation among youths who post contents, the perception of youths on social media validation and the influence of social media validation on the self-esteem of youths in Abuja metropolis. The study was anchored on the social comparison theory and the sociometer theory; the survey research method was used for the study with a sample size of 368 youths drawn from the population of youths aged 15-30 in Abuja metropolis. The researcher adopted the Cochran formula because the exact population of the study was unknown. The questionnaire was employed as the instrument for data collection and the data collected was analysed using simple tables, frequencies, percentages and mean analysis. The findings of this study revealed with an average mean of 2.8, youths in Abuja metropolis actively use social media and engage with contents, Youths had at a mean value of 2.5 showed a high level of expectation of validation when they post content on social media platforms. Respondents believe that validation indices can influence how youths see and feel about themselves with an average mean value of 3.1 and at a mean value of 2.7 social media validation has a negative influence on the self-esteem of youths in Abuja metropolis. The study concluded that social media validation has more negative implications than positive on the self-esteem of youths. The researcher recommends that social media platforms should implement some restrictions on their apps that reduces the time spent on social media by the users, and youths should be encouraged not to rely on social media validation indices (likes, comments, shares and followers) to build self-esteem or dictate how they should see themselves.
