Abstract

This study examined the prospects and challenges of regional integration in Nigeria with particular emphasis on Nigerias role in promoting economic, political, and social cooperation within West Africa and Africa generally. The study aimed at identifying the benefits of regional integration, the challenges hindering its effectiveness, and possible measures for improving integration efforts in Nigeria and Africa. The study adopted a descriptive research design and relied mainly on secondary sources of data collection such as textbooks, academic journals, government publications, ECOWAS reports, African Union documents, newspapers, and internet materials. The data collected were analyzed using qualitative descriptive analysis. The findings of the study revealed that regional integration offers several prospects including trade expansion, economic growth, industrial development, employment creation, infrastructural development, political cooperation, peacekeeping, security collaboration, and promotion of democratic governance. The study further revealed that Nigeria has played a major leadership role in regional integration through financial contributions, peacekeeping missions, diplomatic engagements, and support for ECOWAS and African Union activities. However, the study also identified several challenges affecting regional integration in Nigeria and Africa generally. These challenges include poor infrastructure, corruption, insecurity, terrorism, political instability, weak institutions, lack of political will, and differences in economic policies among member states. The study concluded that despite the numerous challenges facing regional integration in Africa, effective cooperation among member states can promote sustainable development, peace, and economic growth within the region. The study recommended improvement in infrastructure, stronger security cooperation, effective implementation of regional policies, promotion of industrialization, and greater political commitment among African leaders.
