Abstract
A common immunosuppressive and chemotherapy drugs, cyclophosphamide is frequently linked to liver, renal, and hematological damage during clinical usage. This study examined the therapeutic effects of Pennisetum purpureum leaf extract on immunosuppression caused by cyclophosphamide in Wistar albino rats. Thirty-five male rats were split into seven groups at random, immunosuppressed with cyclophosphamide, and given divided dosages of ethanol leaf extract, levamisole, or vehicle (100, 200, and 400 mg/kg) adminstered over a 14-day span. Flavonoids, alkaloids, tannins, phenolic compounds, saponins, terpenoids, and cardiac glycosides were detected by qualitative phytochemical analysis. Cyclophosphamide significantly increased liver and kidney function markers while reducing haematological indices. Treatment with the extract significantly and dose-dependently restored these parameters, with the 400 mg/kg dose producing effects comparable to the standard control. These results suggest that Pennisetum purpureum has hepatoprotective, nephroprotective, hematopoietic, and immunomodulatory qualities, perhaps because of its anti-inflammatory and antioxidant phytochemicals. According to the study, Pennisetum purpureum may be used as a natural remedy to prevent organ toxicity and immunosuppression brought on by cyclophosphamide.
