Abstract

The study examines the Link between Insecurity and Political development in Abia State, Nigeria. It gives attention to the effects of insecurity in all its ramifications (sitting-at-home, kidnapping, armed robbery, attacks on security agencies and destruction of public utilities) on participation in Democratic processes and good governance in the state, particularly during the 2023 general elections. The study is guided by the worry and concern that the insecurity in the South-East region has not abated, which has created a decline in voter turnout and public confidence in the democratic system and institution. The study seeks to answer the following research questions: (1) How has the issue of insecurity impacted voter turnout in Umuahia North and Aba South Local Government Areas in the period between 2022 and 2025? (2) What is the relationship between insecurity and political development in Umuahia North and Aba South Local Government Areas between 2022 to 2025? The study takes a qualitative approach, using secondary data derived from reports of security monitoring organisations, policy documents, academic and election observation reports. Theoretical explanations are based on the concept of political development theory in explaining the relationship between security and democratic stability. The results show that insecurity in Abia state had a very strong negative impact on political activities, voter participation, freedom of movement, and electoral administration. Also, the forced stay-at-home orders and the many violent attacks were not creating a sense of security and led to reduced civic engagement and political participation. The findings of the study is that the insecurity situation in Abia State is indeed a significant challenge to the political development of the State as it hampers the effectiveness of democratic institutions and citizens’ participation in governance. It calls for enhancing the security architecture, boosting intelligence efforts and encouraging community-based security response to regain public trust and increase political stability in the state.
