Abstract
This study examined the impact of auditing on the integrity of financial statements of quoted companies in Nigeria, using earnings quality as a proxy for financial statement integrity. Specifically, the study investigated the effects of auditor type, audit tenure, auditor rotation, and audit fees on earnings quality of quoted companies in Nigeria. The study adopted an ex-post facto research design and relied on secondary data obtained from the annual reports of selected quoted companies listed on the Nigerian Exchange Group (NGX). Panel data covering ten selected quoted companies for the period 2019–2023 were utilized for the analysis. Data were collected through documentary review and extraction of relevant accounting and auditing variables from the annual financial statements of the selected firms. Descriptive statistics, correlation analysis, Fixed Effects and Random Effects panel regression models, Hausman specification test, and normality test were employed in analysing the data and testing the hypotheses using EViews 10 statistical software. The findings revealed that auditor type has a positive but insignificant effect on earnings quality of quoted companies in Nigeria. Similarly, audit tenure and auditor rotation were found to have positive but insignificant effects on earnings quality. The study further revealed that audit fees have a significant negative effect on earnings quality during the period under review. The Hausman test indicated that the Fixed Effects Model was the most appropriate estimator for the study. The study concludes that audit fees constitute the major auditing characteristic influencing earnings quality among the sampled quoted companies, while auditor type, audit tenure, and auditor rotation do not significantly affect earnings quality. Based on the findings, the study recommends that firms should strengthen internal control systems and corporate governance mechanisms, ensure transparency in audit engagements, and adopt measures that enhance the quality and credibility of financial reporting. Regulatory authorities should also strengthen oversight and monitoring of auditing practices to promote the integrity of financial statements among quoted companies in Nigeria.
