Abstract
This research studied the influence of social media use on the marital relationships of couples in Enugu North Local Government Area, Enugu State, Nigeria. The study was based on four objectives: to determine the extent of social media use among married couples in the study area, to ascertain how social media affects their intimacy and trust, to identify common social media-related conflicts as well as to determine the relationship between social media use along with marital satisfaction. The study was based on the Technological Determinism framework. A descriptive survey design was used. Based on data obtained from the marriage registry department of Enugu North Local Government Area (2025), the population of married couples is 361. Purposive sampling was used and 361 copies of the questionnaire were given out. Out of this number, 354 copies were filled in the right way and returned, while 7 copies were either not returned or were not filled in the right way. Data were studied with how in many cases counts, mean scores and a decision rule based on a four-point Likert scale. The results show that married couples in the study area use social media at a high level, with WhatsApp being the most used platform. Social media use was found to affect intimacy and trust, generate marital conflict as well as reduce marital satisfaction where it is not proper form managed. The study ends by stating that uncontrolled social media engagement amongst couples leads to marriage related problems in Enugu North LGA, while setting boundaries is a key to mitigating the damages that might be caused by unmanaged usage. Hence, this study recommended that couples mutually agree daily screen limits and couple counsellors were encouraged to bring in behavioural dimensions in their counseling sessions and also that community-based organizations were called upon to design programmes for structured digital relationship education. Also, this study recommended that further studies be structured as long-term surveys, explore specific behavioral impacts of social media platforms and adopt dyadic multiple-perspective approaches in more diverse regions.
