Abstract

Growing demand for natural antioxidants is attributed to the adverse effects of synthetic antioxidants and resurgence of medicinal plants into use. The current investigation was undertaken to assess in vitro antioxidant activity of ethanol extract of stem bark of Jatropha tanjorensis. Phytochemical screening (in vitro), antioxidant vitamins (Vitamins A, C & E) and DPPH radical scavenging assay and Total Antioxidant Capacity (TAC) assay of the extract were performed according to standard lab procedures. In vitro Phytochemical screening of ethanol extract showed the presence of Alkaloids, Flavonoids, Tannins, Saponins, Cardiac Glycosides and presence of no phenolic compounds. Moderate free radical scavenging activity was demonstrated in DPPH assay ranging between (25.68 ± 1.36 to 30.73 ± 0.72%) for the concentrations tested.The TAC of the extract was consistently high ranging from (74.98 ± 0.05% to 92.05 ± 0.05%) and was comparable with the ascorbic acid standard. Vitamin analysis revealed high level of Vitamin A (81.14 ± 0.80 mg/g) and moderate level of Vitamin C (4.78 ± 0.37 mg/g) and detectable level of Vitamin E (1.60 ± 0.12 mg/g) found in the extract suggested that these antioxidant vitamins contribute to the antioxidant activity observed. The presence of both bioactive phytochemical and antioxidant vitamins has led to the synergistic interaction, which could be responsible for the antioxidant activity of the extract. Hence, the ethanol extract of stem bark of Jatropha tanjorensis had shown good antioxidant capacity and may be considered as potential natural antioxidant resources for treatment and prevention of oxidative stress related diseases.
