Abstract

This study examined the assessment of palm tree proceeds and sustainable growth of Small and Medium Enterprises (SMEs) in Nigeria. Specifically, the study investigated the influence of palm kernel oil proceeds on employment generation among SMEs in Nigeria, the effect of palm kernel cake production on market share expansion of SMEs, and the contribution of palm kernel shell utilization to sustainable economic growth of SMEs. The study was anchored on the Resource-Based Theory and Sustainable Livelihoods Theory. A survey research design was adopted. The population consisted of 180 staff members from selected palm oil processing SMEs in Enugu State. Due to the manageable population size, the entire population was used as the sample through the census method. Data were collected using a self-structured questionnaire titled Palm Tree Proceeds and SME Growth Questionnaire (PTP-SMEGQ). The instrument was validated by experts and yielded a Cronbach's Alpha reliability coefficient of 0.84. Mean scores and standard deviations were used to answer the research questions, while Chi-square (χ²) statistics were used to test the hypotheses at a 0.05 level of significance. The findings revealed that palm kernel oil proceeds significantly influence employment generation among SMEs (Grand Mean = 3.14; χ² = 33.42, p < 0.05). Palm kernel cake production was also found to have a significant effect on market share expansion of SMEs (Grand Mean = 3.14; χ² = 35.16, p < 0.05). Furthermore, palm kernel shell utilization significantly contributed to sustainable economic growth of SMEs (Grand Mean = 3.15; χ² = 38.24, p < 0.05). The study concluded that palm tree proceeds are essential for enhancing employment generation, market share expansion, and sustainable economic growth among SMEs. It recommended improved processing technologies, strengthened market linkages, and enhanced value addition practices among palm oil processing SMEs. Keywords: Palm Tree Proceeds, Pal
