Abstract

Blood banks play a critical role in healthcare delivery because timely availability of safe blood can determine patient survival during emergencies, surgeries, childbirth complications, trauma cases, and chronic medical conditions. Many blood donation and distribution processes still depend on manual records, fragmented communication, and delayed stock updates, which can cause inventory errors, difficulty in locating compatible blood units, poor request tracking, and wastage through expiry. This study designed and implemented a web-based Blood Bank Management System to improve donor registration, donation recording, blood inventory monitoring, hospital request management, and administrative reporting. The system was developed as a full-stack web application using Django, Django REST Framework, JSON Web Token authentication, SQLite database, React, Vite, React Router, and Axios. The backend provides RESTful endpoints for authentication, donors, donations, inventory, hospitals, requests, and reports, while the frontend provides role-based user interfaces for administrators, blood bank staff, and hospital users. The implemented system records each donation, automatically creates an inventory unit, tracks expiry dates, restricts functions by user role, allows hospitals to submit requests, and enables staff to approve, reject, reserve, and fulfill requests. The result is a functional management platform that improves accuracy, visibility, accountability, and speed in blood bank operations. The project contributes a practical digital solution that can be expanded with notifications, analytics, barcode scanning, and deployment to a production database.
