Abstract

This study examined changing cultural values and the effect on the status of the elderly in obe, Nkanu West local government Area Enugu state. The study was carried out to investigate the major cultural values that have changed over time in the community ,examine how these changing values has affected status and welfare of elderly persons ,determine the infulence of modernization,education and rural -urban migration on family care and social support systems,and identify the socioeconomic and emotional challenges faced by elderly persons in obe community.The study was guided by four research questions and four hypothesis.The study adopted a descriptive survey research design .Both quantitative and qualitative methods of data collection were employed .Questionnaire and interview schedule were used as instrument for data collection from the respondents.The population of the study was comprised of residents in obe community in Nkanu West Local Government Area while taro yamane’s formula was used to derive a sample size of 395 respondents. A multi-stage sampling technique involving purposive stratified, and simple random sampling method was adopted for the study. Descreptive statistics such as frequency tables and percentages were used to analyze the research questions while the hypotesis was tested using chi-square(x2) statistical analysis at 0.05 level of significance. The findings of the study revealed that major traditional cultural values such as respect for elders, communual living, family support system and rural-urban migration have weakened traditional family support system for elderly persons. Findings further showed that elderly persons faced several social-economic and emotional challenges including financial difficulties, lonliness neglect inadequate family care , and loss of social roles within the community . the hypothesis tested revealed that cultural values have a significant effect on the elderly in Nkanu West Local Government Area . based on these findings,the study concluded that the erosion of traditional cultural values has negatively affected the welfare, dignity and social relevance of elderly persons in obe community. The study therefore recommended the revival of positive cultural values, strengthening of family support systems, implementation of government welfare programmes for elderly persons and increased community awareness aimed at improving the welfare and social inclusion of elderly people in society.
