Abstract
This study examined the moderating role of resilience in the relationship between perceived stress and psychological well-being among renal patients in Enugu metropolis. A correlational cross-sectional research design was adopted, and data were collected from 104 patientsundergoing treatment in selected hospitals. The participants comprised 78(75%) males and 26(25%) females. Standardized instruments, including the Perceived Stress Scale (PSS-10), Brief Resilience Scale (BRS-6), and Ryff’s Psychological Well-Being Scale, were used for data collection. Data were analyzed using Pearson correlation, hierarchical regression, and Hayes PROCESS macro.Perceived stress was significantly related to psychological well-being, showing negative associations with resilience (r = −.40, p < .01), positive relations (r = −.35), self-acceptance (r = −.36), and autonomy (r = −.17). Resilience was significantly and positively related to psychological well-being, including positive relations (r = .44, p < .001), autonomy (r = .27, p < .01), environmental mastery (r = .25, p < .01), and self-acceptance (r = .26, p < .01). However, resilience did not significantly moderate the relationship between perceived stress and psychological well-being, as the interaction terms were not significant (p > .05)across the tested models. The study concludes that perceived stress acts as a risk factor, while resilience functions as a direct protective factor rather than a buffering variable among renal patients. It is recommended that psychological interventions targeting stress reduction and resilience enhancement be integrated into renal care to improve patients’ psychological well-being.
