Abstract

This project entails the design and implementation of a university based social media platform Go-Connect, for students and staff of Godfrey Okoye University (GOU) Enugu, Nigeria. The design and implementation of this platform was conceived due to the lack of a dedicated social media platform for students that would cater to the students’ needs within Godfrey Okoye University and the apparent gap between the student social-media usage on general-purpose online platforms such as Whatsapp, Facebook and other platforms which are not tailored to reflect the university’s unique academic, spiritual and social identity, and as such the project developed an online social media application the incorporates the following functionalities: user authentications and management, social feed with AJAX features, 24hour ephemeral stories, private instant messages, group community, press manager system, internal student market, a mentorship management module and an administrative back-end system, usingPHPfor the backend application, MySQL as the database server, Bootstrap 5for responsive UI and JavaScriptFetch API for asynchronous communication. Agile software methodology was applied in the software development, with six development sprints in progress for the implementation and testing of the system. Based on useracceptance test results (UAT) on ten users, Go-Connect achieved a user acceptance score average of 4.6 / 5.0. This means that the developed platform is user-friendly and meets the initial requirements as developed and would successfully fill the identified gap. Go-Connect as a contribution adds to the literature on technology adoption within the Nigerian universities as it is shown to be viable than usage of general platforms
