Abstract
This study examined the influence of the United Nations and assessed its impact on the RussiaUkraine war between 2022 and 2025. Specifically, the study examined how the veto power of the United Nations Security Council affected the ability of the United Nations to influence the RussiaUkraine war and assessed the impact of United Nations diplomatic and humanitarian interventions on the management of the conflict. The study adopted Offensive Realism as its theoretical framework. The theory explained how power politics, national interests, and the anarchic nature of the international system shaped the behaviour of major powers and limited the effectiveness of international organizations during the conflict. The study adopted an ex post facto research design and relied on secondary sources of data such as United Nations reports, Security Council records, academic journals, policy documents, books, and credible media publications. Data were analyzed using content analysis. Findings revealed that the veto power of the United Nations Security Council significantly weakened the ability of the United Nations to influence the Russia-Ukraine war, as Russia consistently blocked major resolutions aimed at ceasefire enforcement and collective action. The study also found that although United Nations diplomatic and humanitarian interventions contributed to humanitarian relief, civilian protection, and international awareness, they had limited success in achieving a sustainable ceasefire or political settlement due to geopolitical disagreements among major powers. The study concluded that the structural limitations of the United Nations, especially the veto mechanism, reduced its effectiveness in managing conflicts involving permanent members of the Security Council. The study recommended reforms in the use of veto power during major humanitarian crises and greater strengthening of multilateral diplomatic and humanitarian mechanisms to improve the effectiveness of the United Nations in future interstate conflicts.
