Abstract

This study examined the impact of international terrorism on Nigeria’s national security, with particular focus on the activities of Boko Haram and the Islamic State West Africa Province (ISWAP) between 2015 and 2023. The specific objectives were to assess the extent to which Boko Haram armed attacks affected internal security in Nigeria and to examine how the insurgent activities of ISWAP influenced public safety within the study period. The study adopted the Frustration–Aggression Theory as its theoretical framework, explaining that prolonged socio-economic deprivation, marginalization, poor governance, and unemployment contribute to violent extremism and insurgency. An ex post facto research design was employed because the events under investigation had already occurred and could not be manipulated by the researcher. Data were collected through the documentary method using secondary sources such as textbooks, journal articles, government reports, security reports, publications of international organizations, newspapers, and online materials. The data collected were analyzed using content analysis. Findings from the study revealed that Boko Haram attacks significantly undermined Nigeria’s internal security through bombings, attacks on civilian settlements, destruction of infrastructure, and assaults on military formations, leading to loss of lives, displacement of persons, and instability in affected communities. The findings further showed that although the intensity of Boko Haram attacks gradually declined between 2017 and 2023 due to military operations and regional cooperation, the humanitarian and security impacts remained severe. The study therefore recommended improved intelligence gathering, enhanced regional security cooperation, stronger border control, effective socio-economic development policies, youth empowerment programmes, and community-based counter-terrorism strategies to address the root causes of insurgency and strengthen national security in Nigeria.
