Abstract
Background: Pefloxacin is a fluoroquinolone antibacterial agent which possesses broad activity against both gram-positive and gram-negative bacteria. Several reports have revealed organs/tissuestoxicity of some antibiotics. Hence, the present study was designed to monitor some biomarkersofcardiovascular and renal systems in albino rats administered pefloxacin, an antibiotic drug. Methodology: Twenty-four adult male albino rats, divided into four groups (A, B, C and D, of sixrats ineachgroup), were used in this research. Group D was the control group. Groups A, B, and Cwere administered(through oral intubation) 5.7, 11.4 and 17.1 mg/kg body weight of pefloxacin solution respectivelyfor sevenconsecutive days. Results: At the end of the administration, there was a decrease in feed and water intake accompaniedbyadecrease in physical activities and body weights in the test animals compared to the control. There wasalsoasignificant (P<0.05) increase in serum levels of creatinine, urea, uric acid total cholesterol, triglycerides, lowdensity lipoprotein, cardiac troponin I, creatine kinase and lactate dehydrogenase, while highdensitylipoprotein decreased significantly (P<0.05) in the groups administered the drug compared tothecontrol. These effects of pefloxacin were observed to be dose-dependent. Conclusion: The findings of this research are indicative that the antibiotic may be toxic to the renal andcardiovascular systems. Thus, it should be avoided by patients having any disorder related to the renal andcardiovascular systems.
