Abstract

This work responds to the papal injunction to Christians to recognize new forms of poverty and new categories of the poor in our midst (EG, nos. 210-215). From a study of Old Testament terminologies for the poor, the author joins Pope Francis in saying that the main causes of poverty are exclusion and exploitation. This research yields a definition of the poor which includes social, economic, political and religious categories.
