Abstract
Education is accepted as a very powerful instrument of change. Language has been defined as the tool of tools in education. English language is here seen as being central to the Nigerian education process because other subjects in the curriculum utilize it. If this be the case, then the need to promote quality in the production of English teachers in paramount. This can be done by ensuring adequate production of the right caliber of people through seminars, workshops and conferences and teacher upgrading programmes. The focus of this paper is on the need for quality assurance in English teacher production through quality training and retraining. Ways of doing this were discussed and recommendations made.
