Abstract
The aim of this study is to appraise the effect of taxation on economic growth of Nigeria. The objectives of the study are to evaluate the effect of petroleum profit tax on the real gross domestic product of Nigeria, to examine the impact of company income tax on the real gross domestic product of Nigeria and to determine the impact of custom and excise duty on the real gross domestic product of Nigeria. The study used ex post facto design as methodology due to the fact the secondary data was used. The data used was sourced from Central Bank of Nigeria Statistical Bulletins. The analytical tools used for the study were; descriptive statistics, unit root test and auto correlation test, heteroskedasticity, bound test and Auto Regressive Lag Model (ARDL). The findings of the study include that petroleum profit tax has significant effect on the gross domestic product of Nigeria; company income tax has significant effect on the gross domestic product of Nigeria and customs and excise duties have significant effect on the gross domestic product of Nigeria. The study recommends that government should embark on putting in place such strategies aimed at not only minimizing the incidence of tax evasion but also broadening her revenue base. Further research should be embarked on to widen the scope of study on this topic to include more tax revenue sources as this would present a clearer picture on the contribution of taxation to Nigeria economic growth.
