Abstract

The study evaluates the Impact of Government Expenditure on the economic growth on Nigerian economy 1980-2016. It examined the contribution of government revenue government debts, government expenditure, and government transfer on economic growth, Using data from the Central Bank of Nigeria Annual Reports and Statistical Bulletin. The work adopted OLS technique to construct a multiple regression model. The result indicated that government expenditure do not have a significant effect on economic growth in Nigeria while government revenue, government transfer and government debt has positive and significant impact on economic growth. The work concluded that achievement of economic growth through fiscal policy in Nigeria is a mirage as a result of inconsistencies in government polices wasteful spending, corruption and poor policy implementation. Therefore, it was recommended among others that government should avoid unnecessary borrowings: ensure that policies are implemented and inconsistencies are minimized: leakages and corruption in the country are tackled with all level of seriousness and above all, the application of fiscal transparency and responsibility in the running of government business.
