Abstract
Mushroom is a fleshy fruiting body of fungus that consists typically of a stipe (stalk) bearing a pileus(cap). Some of the edible mushrooms include: Pleurotus pulmonarius, Pleurotus ostreatus, Calocybe indica and Pleurotus tuber regium. The Pleurotus ostreatus has a bare stipe, decurrent cap, ecologically saprophytic. In this project, during cultivation, the mushroom seed [spawn] was grown by inoculating the tissue of a fully grown Phoenix oyster mushroom into PDA (potato dextrose agar) and incubated for 48 - 240 hours at 27°C, with constant check, to see if the mycelia has fully colonized the media, 2cm of the fully colonized mycelia was cut and i inoculated into the grains. The spawn took 7-21days to fully ramify under appropriate atmosphere condition. The grains used for spawn production were: red sorghum grains, white maize and sugarcane bagasse. The white maize was the more favourable for mycelia running. It took 6 days just for the spawn to ramify, followed by the red sorghum grains, but the red sorghum grains were used to inoculate the substrates in this project. The substrates used in this project were: SWRB (sawdust and rice bran), SWGN (sawdust and groundnut shells),SWDB(sawdust and dry banana leaves) and SGB(Sugarcane bagasse).The inoculated substrates (agro-wastes) were kept in the incubation room for 5 -14 days to allow for full ramification. In the case of SGB (Sugarcane bagasse) it took 5days to be fully ramified, compared to other substrates. Sawdust and rice bran substrate, were found best in this project for the cultivation of Pleurotus ostreatus. It supported the growth, especially in terms of harvesting fruiting bodies compared to other substrates [harvest daily in a duration of 12 hours]. The fully ramified substrate were then taken into the fruiting room while watering commenced (thrice each day) till fruiting bodies begun, sprouting out. Other substrates took 4 -14days before sprouting out fruiting bodies but SGB (sugarcane bagasse) took 4-5days to sprout out. The Sugarcane bagasse substrate took 7days to sprout out again after the first fruiting harvest.
