Abstract

This paper examines the place of language in communication and shows that it occupies a central role in politica1 communication and discourse. With language, political views. perceptions, thoughts, feelings etc. are not only cognized but are also given expression. In view of this, this paper is set to examine the linguistic peculiarities in the language use of President Buhari in his inaugural Speech, and examines also bow his choice of 'ords facilitates a deeper understanding of the text by Nigerians. To achieve this fa t the paper employs Halliday's Functionalism and Literary Stylistics as theoretical framework with a view to analyzing and explicating the principles behind his linguistic style or his language choice to achieve aesthetic function and political acceptance, ~ 0 in turn fuller understanding of the speech.
