Abstract

This study investigated the factors militating against the actualization of environmental studies in social studies curriculum in secondary schools in Nsukka educational zone. The study sought to accomplished the following specific objectives; examined the extent of coverage of environmental studies contents in the social studies curriculum and how adequately qualified are the teachers who teach environmental studies in secondary schools in that discipline. The design adopted in this study was basically a descriptive survey type. Primary and secondary data was used as source of data collection. The population of the study consists of J 00 Social Studies teachers in Junior Secondary Schools in Nsukka Education Zone. A sample size of eighty (80) out of I 00 Social Studies teachers was used for the study. A random sampling technique was adopted in selecting the respondents for the study. The researcher made use of questionnaire and checklist: The study finds out that social studies curriculum does not adequately cover environmental studies needs of the society: the topics that reflect environmental studies needs of the society constituted only 20% of the social studies curriculum . contents and Social studies teachers both NCE and degree holders are adequately trained to teach. 60% of the social studies teachers had qualifications in social studies but none in environmental studies. The study recommended that there is need therefore to train teachers for environmental studies in secondary school: this could also be achieved by retraining social studies teachers through in- service training programmes.
