Abstract

This study examines the effect of oil pricevolatility on the volatility of Nigeria’s market capitalization. It uses monthly frequency data for the period from January,1997 to December 2016 and the EGARCH [1,1] model for data analysis. Average monthly inflation and exchange rates are introduced in the model as control variables. The results suggest that oil price volatility has a positive and weak effect on the volatility of market capitalization. The study advises market participants to target oil price movements as an important instrument for predicting the stock market volatility in Nigeria.
