Abstract

The General Ironsi Regime in May 1966 promulgated the Unification Decree No 34 as a solution to the problem of ethnicity which was the reason for the collapse of the first republic. Regional autonomy was severed from the regions, the Centre was strengthened, civil, public and judicial services were unified likewise exploitation of mineral resources, management and distribution of revenue. The result was clamors of igbo domination which the north argued its inherent in the decree that led to the violent overthrow of the Ironsi regime.
