Abstract

This research was conducted in Enugu metropolis using teachers of English in the NTI/ NCE by Distance Learning System (DLS). It aimed to find out the problems of ICT use facing teachers of English/ since this is a basic requirement before e- teaching and learning could take place. //It also explored the constraints to e-learning in the programme.// A structured questionnaire containing 16 items was administered to 72 teachers in five study centres for data collection. Out of this, 55 respondents, which is 76% returned the instrument. The data were analyzed using means and Standard Deviation. The results showed that many teachers were not quite knowledgeable about the use of the computer. Many teachers, by their responses showed that they are not even familiar with the component parts of a computer. All the respondents are unanimous with their agreement over the constraints to e-learning. Based on these, it is recommended that distance education operators should explore the possibilities of on-line teaching and learning by providing computer laptops and internet access for their facilitators and also organizing training programmes for them to bring them up to date with the online options in education. This will be a good development for literacy advancement in Nigeria.
