Abstract
Teacher education is an educational programme designed to equip prospective teachers with the knowledge, skills, attitudes and behaviour needed for effective teaching in primary and post primary schools as professional teachers. Unfortunately in the universities many of the students of other faculties usually look down on students that enrol in the faculty of education and indirectly make jest of them. Consequently many of the education students feel inferior to those of other faculties. The major purpose of this study was to examine the reasons for the aversion ofs of non-education undergraduate students of private universities in Enugu State Metropolis towards professionalization education in readiness for teaching in Primary or secondary Schools. The population consisted of all the 3641 non- education non-education undergraduate students of both Godfrey Okoye and Caritas universities in Enugu. Using Yamane’s (1964) statistical formula the sample size was determined as 360. Consequently, 360 copies of questionnaire were distributed to the respondents out of which 345 copies were correctly filled by the respondents and utilised for the study. The collected data was analysed using statistical package for social sciences (SPSS). The study revealed among other factors that inadequate salaries and other fringe benefits were implicated as major factors contributing to non- education undergraduate students’ aversion to teaching in primary and secondary schools after graduation. The study recommends that government and other employers of teachers in educational sector should improve the salary condition of teachers in order to make teaching more attractive to people. On the other hand, the society should hold teachers at high esteem and accord them due respect because teaching is the pillar for the growth and development of every nation in science, technology and development of manpower.
