Abstract

On behalf of the Proprietor, the Board of Trustees, the Governing Council, the Senate, staff and students of Godfrey Okoye University, I heartily welcome you to the First Convocation of our University. I welcome particularly the parent of our graduating students whose sacrifices and support have made this celebration possible. I warmly welcome the graduating students who have come from different parts of the country where they are doing their National Youth Service programme in order to attend this ceremony. During the memorable first matriculation of this University, I presented a matriculation address entitled "This is Our Chance: Godfrey Okoye University". I can vividly recall that moment when Prof Julius Okojie called out the name "Godfrey Okoye University" to present the operating license that brought the university into life. I shivered, tears filling my eyes. I quickly closed my tear-filled eyes and muttered these unforgettable words: this is our chance! Today as I see the first fruit of four years of uninterrupted academic sowing and toiling, I cannot but recall those words of the first matriculation. At the first matriculation, the words "this is our chance" were mere dreams and wishes of an indescribably excited soul. Today, having tested these dreams in the furnace of academic rigor and systematic administrative chiseling, I have seen the dreams metamorphose into a robust, palpable reality.
