Abstract

The word ‘CARE’ as an intransitive verb can be defined as “to feel interest or concern; examples are to care about freedom; to give care for the sick; to have liking, fondness or taste etc, and as a transitive verb, ‘CARE’ means the following; to be concerned about or to the extent of ‘don’t care what they say; or doesn’t care a damn. The word ‘CARER’ is a noun; care less; not to care – used positively and negatively with the same meaning. We attach a great importance on what we care about. What can we care about? It could be ourselves, our aged parents, our siblings, our husbands, our children, our relations, our environment, etc. Both Martin Heidegger and Pope Francis are of the opinion that ‘Dasein’, ‘Being’ is in the untruth. We constantly see ourselves falling from our ‘authenticity’ into our ‘inauthenticity’, and hence this has resulted in the lost to the they – self. The third of the three dimensions of Heideggerian ‘CARE’ is “fallen – ness”. Dasein has, in the first instance, fallen away from itself as an authentic potentiality for Being its self, and has fallen into the world…. Pope Francis on the other hand calls all of us to take CARE of ourselves, our families, the poor and the vulnerable, and rightly our environment. He rightly condemns the throwaway culture. The Heideggerian call for Dasein to take CARE of itself, to pay attention to its own Being is very much comparable and in line with Pope Francis ‘Laudato Si Mi Signore’ “Praise be to you, my Lord”, on the care of the Environment.
