Abstract
The Economics community of West Africa States (ECOWAS), was established on May 28, 1975 through the treaty of Lagos. It is a 15-member regional group with a mandate of promoting economic integration in all fields of activity of the constituting countries. ECOWAS was set up to foster the ideal of collective self-sufficiency for its member states in areas such as industry, transport, telecommunications, energy, agriculture, natural resources, commerce, monetary and financial issues, social as well as cultural matters. ECOWAS has also been intervening in some state matters in African countries. The case of the Gambia 2016 election attracted the ECOWAS team to restore democracy in the country. The essence of this study is therefore to carry out an empirical analysis of ECOWAS intervention and democratization in West Africa Sub-Region. A Study of Gambia 2016 General Elections. The methodology adopted in the research is explanatory approach based on existing literature, including information and data gathered within and outside Gambia. The theoretical framework of the project is the political realism. The study conclude that ECOWAS has shown the world that it is resolute organization which can stamp its feet down against sit-tightism ' in the sub-region. The case of Gambia served as a warning to other sit tight leaders in West Africa and those who are still harboring such ugly intentions as ECOWAS is now all out to project democracy as well as ensure peace and security in the West Africa sub-region. It is therefore the recommended of the study that democratic consciousness and political vigilantism is recommended for all citizens of the West Africa sub-region so as to prevent their presidents from ever nursing the ambition not to talk of extending their stay in office unduly and ensuring that all member states entrench term limits in their constitution.
