Abstract
Contamination or cross-contamination of street foods. especially sliced fruits and vegetables. are aggravated by unsanitary processing and preservation methods. The use of dirty utensils. as well as the open display of street food produce and encourages sporadic visits by flies. cockroaches, rodents and dusts. The aim of this study was to determine the bacteriological quality of the sliced watermelon sold by street vendors in Enugu metropolis. Ten different samples of watermelon were purchased from ten different vendors in Enugu and they were assessed to determine their microbiological quality. A total of 26 bacterial isolates were obtained from the watermelon samples and were sub cultured into pure cultures. The Gram reaction and colonial morphology of the isolates were also determined. Various biochemical analyses were carried out to ascertain precisely the bacterial isolates impregnating the watermelon samples. The isolates included Bacillus spp. Escherichia coli, Pseudomonas spp. Staphylococcus aureus. Klebsiella spp. Lactobacillus spp and Streptococcus spp. The bacterial that occurred frequently include Bacillus spp. Escherichia coli and Pseudomonas spp. These microorganisms could cause a wide range of illness to humans and for that reason, good hygiene practices must be ensured especially in the selling of sliced fruits to minimize the diseases that are associated with huits.
