Abstract

This study examined President Goodluck Jonathan’s agricultural policies and activities from 2011 to 2014. Framing theory constituted the framework of the study. Using content analysis and four selected national dailies, the study sampled 288 editions of the newspaper. Code sheet was the instrument used in collecting data, with a high inter-coder reliability of 0.8. The study found that 23.3% of news stories and articles were on agricultural projects; and that 77.9% of the stories on agriculture were favourable to the policies and projects of President Goodluck Jonathan. It was concluded that newspaper coverage of President Goodluck Jonathan’s agricultural transformation programmes were not significantly high, compared to the reportage of other issues like Boko-Haram, which had 67.8% coverage. It was recommended that the media should pay more attention to the coverage of agricultural issues to help facilitate the desire of the government to reduce the over dependency on oil.
