Abstract

This study investigated effect of corporate social responsibility on financial performance of conglomerate companies in Nigeria from 2005 to 2019. Ex – post facto design was adopted. Secondary data of annual financial statements of conglomerate companies in the consumer sub –sector of listed companies on the floor of the Nigerian Stock Exchange were collected. Judgemental sampling technique was used to select a sample of 5 conglomerate companies from a population of 22. Random panel regression model was utilized for analysis. It was revealed that corporate social responsibility significantly affects the return on assets of conglomerate companies in Nigeria among others. This finding implies that the companies under study are doing a good job in their corporate social responsibility as it significantly influenced their return on assets. The study recommended that conglomerate companies in Nigeria should use reasonable CSR activities to enhance the living standard of their host communities, among others. The study concluded that corporate social responsibility creates favourable goodwill and makes social and business environments conducive and friendly to achieve profit and shareholders’ wealth maximization.
